Cruising the Canal de Briare Aboard Hotel Barge Renaissance

Cruising the Canal de Briare: One of the Oldest French Canals

The picturesque Canal de Briare, connecting the valleys of the Seine and the Loire, is notable for a number of reasons apart from the delightful scenery through which it wends its way. A popular route for both private and commercial cruising vessels, the canal is renowned as one of the loveliest places for a barge cruise as well as being a highly impressive feat of engineering.

Explore the Canal de Briare

A Pioneering History

This canal is one of the country's oldest man-made waterways, built between 1602 and 1642 under the patronage of Henry IV. When first constructed, it linked directly into the Loire at Montargis, but later in the nineteenth century the building of the famous Briare Aqueduct created a bypass to La Cognardière, 2.6km away. Despite its name, the aqueduct actually forms part of the Canal latéral à la Loire.

French Hotel Barge Renaissance Crossing the Briare Aqueduct

An Engineering Triumph

This canal was also the first to be constructed at summit level using “pound locks”, which feature a chamber with gates at either end to control the height of the water within. (Before then locks were created with a single gate.) A summit level canal first rises and then falls along its course, and in the case of the 57km Canal de Briare, it rises through 12 locks before falling through another 24 on an 85m descent.

Rogny-les-Sept-Ecluses

During construction a number of artificial lakes were created in order to feed water into the locks. At the most precipitous location, Rogny, it was necessary to build what was in effect a “staircase” of seven locks in order to navigate the fall of the canal. While it was without a doubt an outstanding feat of engineering, the design caused huge hold-ups as each vessel had to navigate all seven locks before the next was able to pass through. In the end the staircase of locks was abandoned and the canal re-routed to bypass them, but the town was later renamed Rogny-les-Sept-Ecluses in their honor.

Attractions en Route

Along with the locks at Rogny-les-Sept-Ecluses, many other attractions along the course of the canal make it a popular route in France. In Montargis, one of the most renowned local businesses to have put this pretty town on the map is the Mazet Praline Shop. The confectioner still makes its praline treats to the recipe of founder, Leon Mazet, who opened the shop in 1903. As well as a range of chocolates and other delicacies, the shop is famous for its signature caramelised almond, the Praslin Mazet de Montargis.

Château de Saint Fargeau

Situated in the commune of Saint-Fargeau, the magnificent seventeenth-century Renaissance-style Château de Saint Fargeau is the cultural centerpiece of the region, with its checkered history dating back some one thousand years. Its present distinctive pentagonal construction surrounded by six imposing towers is built on top of an original fortress commissioned by Héribert, son of King Hugh Capet. Even though it is privately owned, many parts of the castle are open for public visitation.

From Ancient Trade to Modern Leisure

For many centuries the Canal de Briare existed as an important channel to transport coal, wood, wine and other supplies from the Loire Valley to Paris. Today, this beautiful waterway serves as one of the most appealing locations to explore on a barge cruise.

French Hotel Barge Renaissance - Barge Cruises on the Canal de Briare

Hadrien Famy

Hadrien is a Parisian with a love and innate understanding of all things French. He spent two years working in Australia but his passion for travel was not alleviated. Upon his return to France he was excited at the prospect of rediscovering his native country through the historical canal system.

His first season was spent as a deckhand aboard the French Hotel Barge L'Impressionniste where he literally learned the ropes. From there he joined the barge Renaissance which he will be returning for his sixth season (2019) as Captain.

RECIPE from French Hotel Barge Renaissance: Sticky Toffee Pudding

We would like to share a recipe from the French Hotel Barge Renaissance.

Luke Dessain is a very talented young chef who loves the barging life. He started his career as an 18-year-old working as a sous chef in a French Alps ski resort where he learned to cook classic French cuisine with a Scottish chef as his mentor.

In the 8 years since then, he has refined his considerable skills and now loves nothing more than creating dishes using wonderful local ingredients as the chef aboard Renaissance in Western Burgundy.

This recipe for Sticky Toffee Pudding originates from Luke's English childhood.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups of dates
  • 3 Earl Grey English Breakfast tea bags
  • Brewed coffee
  • 1 cup plain yogurt (don’t throw that cup away!)
  • 1 yogurt container each of sunflower oil and sugar
  • 3 yogurt containers of flour
  • 1 teaspoon of baking powder
  • 4 eggs
  • Between 1/3 and 1/2 cup of salted or unsalted butter
  • Between 1/3 and 1/2 cup soft of ight brown sugar
  • Generous 1/3 cup of cream

Method
  1. De-seed the dates and chop finely. Put the dates in a saucepan with the coffee to almost cover, add the tea bags and cook on a medium heat until reduced.
  2. Combine the flour, sugar, oil, yogurt and eggs until smooth.
  3. Add the reduced dates, mix, then add the baking powder. (Don’t forget to take out the tea bags first!).
  4. Heat the oven to 350F/180C.
  5. Put the mixture into small buttered and floured ramekins (muffin tins could also be used) for cooking and bake for about 20 minutes or until set.
  6. For the caramel sauce, melt the butter and brown sugar together, stirring over a medium heat. Once the sugar has dissolved, add cream, stirring, and reduce to a thick sauce. Note: if you don’t care for salted caramel, use unsalted butter.
  7. To plate up, pop the pudding cakes out of their ramekins, warm through but don’t cook more and cover with the warmed caramel sauce (if there’s any left over, it will keep in the refrigerator).
  8. Garnish with a raspberry and serve with vanilla ice cream.
  9. Enjoy this indulgent pud!

Thank you, Luke, for sharing this recipe with us!

French Hotel Barge Renaissance: Feel Reborn in Western Burgundy / Upper Loire

The word "renaissance" literally means “rebirth”.  A hotel barge cruise along the Canal de Briare in Burgundy is one of the best ways to experience a rebirth of the senses, enjoying the region’s gastronomic offerings and the visual delight of the colorful countryside in the Fall.

French hotel barge Renaissance, Barging in France, Burgundy
French Hotel Barge Renaissance - Barging in France
Upper Loire / Western Burgundy

The eight-passenger, French hotel barge Renaissance provides a true luxury cruise experience. Among its amenities are spacious suites, an on-deck heated spa pool, alfresco dining on the forward deck, a fireplace in the saloon – enjoy these things along with the undivided, personal attention of a five-person crew that includes a captain, tour guide, master chef and two hosts/hostesses.

Discover quaint villages, enjoy beautiful scenery, partake in interesting side trips.

For a memorable experience steeped in the region’s rich gastronomic tradition, it’s hard to surpass the Burgundy region, renowned for some of the best food that France has to offer. Boasting over 60,000 acres of vines, Burgundy is also celebrated for being the origin of the world’s best wines. Among ports of call aboard the Renaissance is the village of Sancerre, home to some of the best known vineyards in the world. The vineyards can be traced back for a thousand years and were once proclaimed by the kings of France to be “some of the most exquisite of the Kingdom.”

In addition to indulging in choice cuisine, travellers can walk among some of France’s most impressive historic landmarks and famous cultural sites such as the beautiful Château de Fontainebleau, one of the largest palaces in France with over 1500 rooms surrounded by 130 acres of parkland. This chateau, once described by Napoleon as, “the true home of kings, the house of ages,” is also the only royal and imperial chateau to have been continuously inhabited for over seven centuries.

Another historically significant stop on the cruise is Chateau de St. Fargeau, the 1000-year old castle that housed many famous royal families from the fifth through the fifteenth centuries. Its architecture is considered one of the finest examples of French classicism.

Château de Sully-sur-Loire

Another memorable excursion on the Renaissance’s itinerary takes guests to a chateau that looks as if it jumped straight out of a fairytale. The Château de Sully-sur-Loire is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the doorway to the Loire Valley. Built at the end of the 14th century, the castle served as a refuge and safe haven for many famous figures throughout history, including Voltaire during his exile from Paris.

Guest Comments for French Hotel Barge Renaissance

Here are some recent charter comments / client feedback for the French Hotel Barge Renaissance:
Beautiful comfortable boat – really big bedrooms – HUGE baths. Crew was FABULOUS! Chef – amazing.

Better food that you can imagine – really better than most 5 stars in the US! Got the whole menu with wines that I can send to you. Fabulous wines and cheese with every lunch and dinner – gained 7 lbs!

They really do a good job of letting you relax – we were off the barge every day – some days biking or walking 10 KM. Good mix of Chateau, Church , etc. OH – one night Maggie (crew, driver, and Tour Guide) heard music in the church near where we were moored and asked if we could come listen. So up we popped from dinner – went to sit in a gorgeous  13th century church to hear a REAL French horn concert rehearsal! 8 horns – REAL ones with no valves. Perfect in this magnificent small old church in a town of 200 people in the middle of NOWHERE!

They really knocked themselves out for us.  We will definitely do this again – and you can feel extremely confident recommending it.
