Hotel Barge MAGNA CARTA: 800th Anniversary of Signing

The English Hotel Barge Magna Carta is offering a special cruise this summer to commemorate the 800th anniversary of the signing of the Magna Carta.

On June 15, 1215, King John sealed (not signed) the Magna Carta in the meadow of Runnymede beside the Thames between Windsor and Staines. The hotel barge Magna Carta will cruise right past the site of the signing at Runnymede and there will also be an excursion to Salisbury Cathedral to see the world’s best-preserved original copy of the famous charter.

Magna Carta, meaning "The Great Charter", is one of the most famous documents in the world. Originally issued by King John of England as a practical solution to the political crisis he faced in 1215, Magna Carta established for the first time the principle that everybody, including the king, was subject to the law. Although nearly a third of the text was deleted or substantially rewritten within ten years, and almost all the clauses have been repealed in modern times, Magna Carta remains a cornerstone of the British constitution.
